Student Academic Skills Center • 784-6801
Free tutoring is available for each University student for most core courses. The Student Academic Skills Center provides small group tutoring (twice-a-week sessions) and walk-in tutoring for math, physics, chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, foreign languages, core humanities, engineering, and additional humanities courses. In the walk-in lab, the tutors can tutor any classes they have taken, including some non-core and upper-division classes. All registration and requests for tutoring may be completed online at www.unr.edu/acssv. We also offer Supplemental Instruction for selected large, lecture-style math classes and MATH 096.

Career Development • 784-4678
Career Development houses four essential programs that provide activities and services to strengthen persistence, enhance learning, assist decision-making and facilitate personal, academic and career success.

Career Development offers confidential services to support students through every stage of the college experience. Drop-ins are welcome, but students are encouraged to schedule appointments in advance by calling (775) 784-4678. Career Development is located in the Thompson Building, Room 200.

Career Counseling
Career Counseling offers professional, confidential counseling to help students with career, educational and personal concerns. Programs and services include:

  • career counseling and exploration activities
  • assistance in choosing or changing a major or career transition
  • career counseling internships for qualified graduate students

Career Opportunities
Career Opportunities is the contact office for on-campus recruitment by employers and coordinates the annual job and career exploration fairs. The office also:

  • assists with résumé writing
  • oversees the Dossier Recommendation File Service
  • maintains an extensive career library
  • offers career success workshops
  • provides computer resources, access to Internet job and internship listings, and a résumé referral program at www.unr.edu/career/jobs

Career Navigator
Career Navigator is the University’s 24/7 Web-based career, student and alumni job board, and offers information on:

  • part-time and full-time on- and off-campus career opportunities
  • work-study positions
  • local, regional and national internships and career opportunities
  • local volunteer opportunities

Career Navigator provides access to work-study and other student positions while enrolled. Students must meet academic credit and GPA requirements to be eligible. Students enrolled in less than half-time may not be employed through this service. Students interested in federal work-study must complete the FAFSA application at www.fafsa.ed.gov to determine eligibility for the needs-based program.

Professional and Graduate School Planning
This is a centralized resource for all University students interested in pursuing post-baccalaureate education. The office offers:

  • advisement on applying to professional and graduate programs such as medicine or law, or graduate schools such as psychology or biology
  • a library of health and legal career opportunity resources and professional school directories
  • workshops to assist students with the application process
  • the Letter of Recommendation Service, which houses letters for students applying to graduate or professional schools

Child and Family Research Center • 784-6762
The Child and Family Research Center (CFRC), located in the Sarah Fleischmann Building, offers a summer camp program for children ages five to 10 years at its 11th Street site. Summer camp will be offered on a full-day, five-day-a-week basis only. Summer camp runs from June 9-Aug. 22. A registration fee and the first week’s tuition and a one-week deposit are due at registration. For more information about costs, times and registration, call the CFRC office at (775) 784-6762.

Academic Advisement • 784-4684
Academic advising is a highly beneficial component of your education at the University of Nevada and a critical part of your university experience. As a student, you should meet regularly with your assigned academic advisor. Need help locating your advisor? TRIO Scholars Program • 784-6044
Students from low-income backgrounds, students with disabilities, and/or first-generation college students are eligible for assistance. The TRIO Scholars Program, funded through the U.S. Department of Education, provides qualifying students with the academic assistance necessary to successfully complete an undergraduate education. Many services are available including group and individual tutoring, academic and career counseling, study skills instruction and evaluation, and graduate school counseling. Residential life offers many advantages. Living on campus can be a very special and rewarding part of your experience at the University of Nevada, Reno. During Summer Session, a limited number of rooms are available during Mini-, First, and Second terms in University residence halls. For students who have a fall term license agreement, housing is available between the end of Second Term and the official opening date of the residence halls for Fall semester. Financial Aid • 784-4666
Financial aid is available on a limited basis for students who were eligible for a Pell Grant, Stafford Loan(s)and/or Alternative Loans and have not used their total award during the 2007-08 academic year. Students must register for classes first and then present their class schedule along with the application for summer aid to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships for an in-person review. The deadline to submit the form requesting a loan is June 6, 2008. Students who are currently enrolled and have not applied for financial aid this academic year have until April 1 to file the 2007/2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibility. All financial aid funds disburse after the add/drop period. Visit our website at www.finaid.unr.edu for information and a lender list. Recipients of a Millennium Scholarship are responsible for paying for summer coursework; reimbursement for credits earned in summer occurs after the Fall semester begins. Summer campus dining options include:

  • The Overlook, on the upper level of Jot Travis Building, is open 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
  • Northside Café, in the Fitzgerald Student Services Building, is open 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday-Friday.
  • Downunder Café, below Argenta Hall, is open 7-8:30 a.m.; 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; and 5-6 p.m., Monday-Friday. Open 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. on weekends.
  • DC Store, in Argenta Hall, is open 6-11 p.m., Sunday-Thursday.
  • Jolt-N-Java Coffee Cart, in front of Getchell Library, is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday, during the First and Second terms.
  • Starbucks, Keva Juice, Port of Subs and more may be available at the Joe Crowley Student Union.

Joe Crowley Student Union • 784-6505
The Joe Crowley Student Union is a 167,000-square-foot, environmentally friendly facility centrally located near Lawlor Events Center, Mackay Stadium and the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center (opening in 2008). The new Joe Crowley Student Union offers numerous services, amenities and gathering places, including:

  • A two-story ASUN Bookstore with fireplace and seating areas featuring an expanded retail space with more room for textbooks, clothing, computer sales, a convenience store and more
  • Student Information Center, WolfCard ID cards, event planning and ticket sales for select University events
  • Food retailers including Starbucks, Keva Juice, Port of Subs, Tahoe Creamery and more in a 7,500-square-foot food court
  • Expanded services including Silver State Schools Credit Union, Kaplan Test Prep, cellular retailers, mailboxes, copying and more

Conveniently located in the Joe Crowley Student Union, ASUN Legal Services will remain open during the summer. This office provides legal information and referral for any legal problem. The service is confidential, and is available for free to all students, staff and faculty. ASUN Legal Services is staffed by a student director and a licensed attorney. Getchell Library officially begins its move to the new Mathweson-IGT Knowledge Center at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008. During the move, a portion of Getchell Library will remain open to provide ongoing library and computing services. Books and journals from Getchell Library will be available for retrieval by request through the library’s online catalog at www.library.unr.edu, or in person at the main Getchell lobby desk. Online access to journals and electronic databases will continue without interruption, some computers will remain available to students, and library reference services will continue to be available. The Basque Library, Business and Government Information Center and Life and Health Sciences Library will offer limited services by request, and the DeLaMare Library will be open as usual. Counseling Services • 784-4648
Counseling Services is the primary counseling office for students at the University of Nevada, Reno. Counselors are licensed psychologists, social workers, substance abuse counselors, and marriage and family therapists, or trainees under supervision. All counseling sessions and records are confidential (available only to the student and counselor) and comply with the new HIPAA requirements. Services include group and individual counseling, couples therapy, substance abuse counseling and education, anxiety management and more. Consultation and training for faculty dealing with distressed students is also available. Services are partially supported by a counseling fee paid by students. Testing Services • 784-1532
Testing Services schedules and administers national and institutional tests (GRE, LSAT MCAT, PRAXIS, PCAT, TSE) that are required for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs and professional schools. Testing Services also serves as an intermediate facilitator for other universities to provide special testing arrangements for their students. Student Health Center • 784-6598
The Student Health Center (SHC) is located across from the School of Medicine on the upper level of the Nell J. Redfield Building. The SHC is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., except holidays. General outpatient medical care is provided by physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Services available include sports medicine, women’s health, immunizations, allergy shots, laboratory, x-ray and family planning. Part-time consultants offer weekly mental health clinics and nutrition counseling for students who have paid the SHC fee. Students who were enrolled in the Spring 2008 semester may purchase the $79 SHC fee for Summer Session. Students are seen on a walk-in basis. Emergencies are seen immediately. Veteran Services • 784-4700
Information on assistance under the Veterans Educational and Vocational Rehabilitation Program is available upon request from the Veteran Services Office, (775) 784-4700, option 5 (for assistance calls only), or at www.unr.edu/stsv/veteran/. Students wishing to receive benefits under any of the public laws pertaining to veterans or their spouses/dependents must complete the Veterans Educational Benefits Application. Students should expect a 30-45 day processing delay for initial applications before receiving educational benefits. Transfer students who have been, and wish to continue, receiving education benefits must complete a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training form when transferring from another institution. Transfer students may expect a delay of 7-10 days before receiving their benefits.

Lombardi Recreation Center • 784-1225
Recreation facilities are available to all students registered for a summer course. Students must present a current, activated WolfCard student ID along with proof of payment of the $65 Lombardi Recreation fee at the Cashier’s Office in the Fitzgerald Student Services Building. Faculty and staff can call the Campus Recreation and Wellness Department for details regarding their use of the building. Parking • 784-4654
A parking permit is required to park a vehicle on campus from 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday. Parking permits may be purchased at Parking and Transportation Services, located on 16th Street south of the Nevada Historical Society, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Summer Session permits and are valid through Aug. 18, 2008, and cost per zone: $20/Blue; $45/Green; $75/Tan; $90/Silver. Special Silver 11 permits are available each Summer Session 2008 term for $20/Mini-Term only; $35/First Term only; and $35/Second Term only. For information, call (775) 784-4654.

One-day parking permits may be purchased at the Information Center located at the Center Street entrance to the University. The center is open from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. during the summer. Services provided to students parked on campus include unlocking vehicles when keys are inside, jump-starting vehicle batteries, and assisting with flat tires.
