Faculty Spotlight — Shannah Kanet

Shannah Kanet

Meet one of the University of Nevada, Reno’s outstanding Summer Session instructors

Shannah Kanet has been an American Sign Language instructor for the University’s Sign Language Program in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology since June 2007. She earned a master of education degree in advanced teaching and administrative leadership skills from Sierra Nevada College and holds certificates in American Sign Language from the College of Southern Nevada.

In addition to teaching courses in American Sign Language levels 1-4, Kanet also educates parents on an on-demand basis in how to communicate in American Sign Language with children aged four years old and younger as a Baby American Sign Language teacher for Smart Babies, an organization she founded in 2007. She has also taught American Sign Language at Truckee Meadows Community College, College of Southern Nevada and Western Nevada College, and is currently a board member at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocacy Resource Center (DHHARC). Kanet is teaching American Sign Language I and III in First Session and American Sign Language II and IV in Second Session this summer.

“I especially love teaching during Summer Session and Wintermester because students get to practice in my classes daily and pick up the language much more quickly.” — Shannah Kanet, M.Ed., adjunct faculty, American Sign Language program, Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology

“Shannah Kanet’s AM 145 was taught with more expertise than any course I have taken within the University. Throughout this course I not only saw students find the language challenging, I found them succeeding with glee and interest to continue. I am confident that my success, as well as that of others in the class, is a direct reflection of Ms. Kanet’s classroom environment.” — January 2013 student letter to the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology
