Summer Institutes
Summer Institutes, providing professional development for educators
and others, feature the latest techniques, hands-on workshops and course
content available in a variety of subject areas and formats. Some institutes
have open enrollment while others are by application only. Some are grant-funded
and have stipends available to defray the expenses of the participants.

Immunization Requirement
Proof of immunization is required for all students attending classes that meet
in whole or in part in Washoe County (Reno, Sparks, Redfield). Students born
in 1957 or later must provide official documentation verifying two doses of
measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) any time in their lifetime, and one dose of
diphtheria and tetanus (DT) within the last 10 years. Students born before
1957 are exempt from the MMR requirement, but must provide DT immunization
documentation. International students have additional requirements. Registrations
cannot be processed without complete documentation. For information, call the

The NNWP Open teaches the philosophy of the National Writing Project,
which emphasizes teachers teaching teachers. Participants will be encouraged
in their own personal writing, instructed in the latest in classroom
writing research, and shown techniques for effective teaching of the
writing process in their classrooms. Strategies for teaching the state
writing standards (5.0, 6.0 and 7.0), writing traits, and district competencies
will be highlighted.

NESSI is a content Earth science course for 4-9th grade teachers and
preservice teachers. Classroom content will cover rocks, minerals, plate
tectonics, landforms, erosion and weathering; a space science component
will cover the solar system, constellations, solar energy and the big
bang theory. Field-based study will provide experiences in identifying
landforms, collecting mineral and fossil samples, understanding geopositioning,
and examining the effects of mining in Nevada. Enrollment is by application

This course is intended for preservice and inservice teachers of mathematics,
grades 6-12. Proportional reasoning is a critical skill that supports
students’ transition from elementary mathematics and computing
to the more complex, proportional thinking of algebra. How do students
learn proportional reasoning and what difficulties do they encounter?
Techniques to guide students through this critical transition will be
examined. This course is part of the PBS TeacherLine Series. Access to
the Internet, email, a word processor, and at least one algebra curriculum
or textbook required. High-speed Internet access recommended. Grades

The exploration of various techniques and styles of playing percussion
instruments, and the combination of rhythmic patterns, will be the focus
of this workshop. A variety of approaches for incorporating drumming
activities into the music classroom will be investigated, taking into

activities which will help them develop fundamental skills applicable
toward creating drumming ensembles and rhythmic accompaniments for classroom

This course provides historical and futuristic perspectives on an institution
that has shaped and will continue to shape the development of the western
U.S. Included will be an historical overview of the Comstock and Virginia
City region, examining its influence on mining, emigration, immigration
and political/social/cultural events, as well as the impacts of these
influences on the region. Efforts to preserve and promote the region’s
resources will also be discussed. Historic preservation and archaeological
exploration on the Comstock will be covered, with an eye toward spotting
connections between historical and anthropological theories and research.
The first session emphasizes lecture and discussion. The second session
will meet in Virginia City for a walking tour of the area to review active
archaeology sites and to appreciate some of the most notable historic
preservation efforts. Students must provide their own transportation
to Virginia City; please bring water, wear comfortable hiking shoes and
dress for the weather. A research paper/teacher application project is
required outside of class time, referencing resources accessible to the
public in local archives or on the Internet. Internet access and email
account are required. Grades will be available in late Aug. 2008.

This cohort support class for candidates engaged in the National Board
assessment process is a two-part program offering two graduate credits
for Fall 2008 and one graduate credit in Spring 2009. (Participants may
choose to take the Fall portion only.) Participants must be graduates
from an accredited teacher education program who have completed three
years of teaching experience, and have applied to the National Board
and the Nevada Department of Education.
The process of seeking National Board Certification is a rigorous one
that involves completion of four portfolio entries centered on teaching,
learning and professional accomplishments, and six timed essay questions.
This cohort group support program will help teachers learn from the experiences
of other National Board Certified teachers, gain tips regarding writing
expectations, provide and receive feedback on their videos and written
entries, learn about the standards for their certificate area and suggestions
on how to teach them, and receive support on navigating the intricate
requirements. Participants will be expected to submit at least two completed
portfolio entries for feedback from the instructor. Attendance
is expected at all sessions. Grades will be available in Dec. 2008. Available
for S/U (pass/fail) grading only. Immunizations required.

and develop curriculum ideas for starting out the school year. Guest
speakers and workshop sessions will introduce new practical and theoretical
information, and participants will be asked to reflect, discuss and demonstrate
an ability to apply the new information in class work and in the class
assignment. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Credit may not be
used toward a University of Nevada, Reno degree. Grades will be available
in Sept. 2008. Immunizations required.

All students who have never attended the University of Nevada, Reno
and have not paid the application fee must pay a nonrefundable application
fee of $60 if they wish to enroll in undergraduate or graduate credit
courses. Students registering for noncredit courses are exempt from
this fee.
